About Me
As the year begins, I will be starting my seventeenth year teaching fifth grade at Woodland Intermediate. I focus on Language Arts and Social Studies. I love being a member of the Green Team. In addition to teaching 5th Grade, I also coach the 8th Grade Girls Volleyball team at the Middle School. I love being involved in extra curricular activities in addition to the academics. I have three amazing children: Micah, Ryan, and Ella. And I also have a puppy, Reese. I love working out, playing volleyball, the Cubs, and Panera ice tea!
I believe that all children can and want to learn. As a teacher, my main goal is to help your child learn to be an independent, lifelong learner. To reach this goal, I will meet your child where he/she is at and guide him/her as far as possible, planning very carefully so that each child can feel challenged without unnecessary frustrations. Teaching children that their best efforts are essential when completing a task is another one of my goals. I want your child to develop and maintain an 'I can and will try' attitude.

My goal as an educator is to empower students – no matter race, gender, learning style, orlearning level – with the tools, resources, and knowledge they will need togain confidence in knowing that they have something to contribute to this worldthat is unique only to them.
After obtaining my B.A. in English from Southwest Baptist University, I began my education career in a small, rural, Missouri school as the librarian. I then graduated with a Masters in Education from Drury University while simultaneously guiding a classroom of exceptional learners before my family made the 18-hour-trek and moved to the Valley of the Sun in 2013. I have co-taught a range of English classes for the last several years and look forward to continuing in English/Language Arts.
I enjoy finding new and innovative ways for students to interact with literature and look forward to sharing my passion for American Literature from the Native American oral traditions and Founding Fathers insights, to the Fireside Poets and the authors of the Harlem Renaissance, to the controversial literature of the 1970's and the most recent contemporary literature. In addition, I enjoy the formula of writing and hope to break the stigma that writing is hard and boring.
I look forward to working with my students to rekindle their love (or like...or tolerance) of reading and prove that writing (even a 5-page-paper in MLA format) is not as difficult as it sounds. As Frank Serafini once said, 'There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.'
Happy Reading!
